Reflets/Reflection
A dialogue between movements stemming from hip hop and traditional dances and visual art.
About:
Cultures join and cross paths. This creation arises from a desire to (re)discover oneself through a universal language: hip-hop culture.
This project features a choreographic collaboration among two African hip-hop choreographers of Senegalese and Malagasy descent, a graffiti artist from Norway, and a light technician from Finland.
The choreographers are dedicated to promoting breaking gestures that are rooted in their heritage while remaining open to the present and future. Coming from urban cultures, they have each practiced their art for approximately twenty years, following unique journeys, and in this moment, they unite to share their humanity.
By involving three young b-boys—performing artists of Senegalese, Guatemalan (based in Norway), and Malagasy backgrounds—the choreographers emphasize the importance of the new generation in their quest to transmit memory. This collaboration serves as a point of resonance, reappropriating codes to inspire change.
Intention:
Hear the youths from different parts of the world about how the future could be by using the tools of Hip Hop culture and African dances.
Create a north-south collaboration, a dialogue of form and visuals that inspires a future that the past can no longer break. "Acting together" for a better world from a common vision, which must be cultivated on a continental and intercontinental scale. Like the small stone thrown on the water, which skips stones, creates waves, and goes as far as possible.
The process started in Dakar, Senegal, continued in Antananarivo, Madagascar, was presented in Helsinki, Finland, and will also continue in Norway.
Context:
In African culture, elders have the responsibility to guide younger ones on their path in life. This practice is a heritage that ancestors pass down to new generations.
A dialogue of forms between movements stemming from hip hop dance and traditional dances, the choreographic work Reflets is a moment of intersection of the past and a contemplated future.
It evokes the violence of the past but summons the desire for a better world by/for all living beings. As a witness to the effectiveness of real communication between generations in the present, to create a future that the past can no longer break. Without frontiers, it opens up to the youths of the world in this temporal crossroads. The process of sharing values settles to meet the Universal.
